Earlier in the year I guided an Expedition in Dominican Republic for humpback whale encounters. Silver Banks and Navidad banks are an offshore area which offer exceptional opportunities for underwater encounter during the winter season.
Mother, Calf and escort groups as well as active groups of up to 10 animals are common and the animals are often relaxed around freedivers in the water allowing for exceptional encounters. At silver banks these animals are often found right up in the sheltered Shallow waters of the reef amongst the coral ommies.
To bear witness to a creature of such size with a complex social and family life never ceases to be a humbling experience.
