The Deep
30 Miles off Cape Point lies a series of canyons washed by warm offshore waters, this zone attracts vagrants from across the deep ocean. In April I spent a week in this area after many years of absence. The most telling change is drastic drop in blue shark numbers, 20 years ago when I did a stint of work in tuna fishing we would often see 20 or more sharks at one time around the boat, on this trip I saw 2 blue sharks in a week. This has been a persist trend over the last 8 years. Targeted and as a valuable bi-catch for other fisheries these sharks have declined massively across the oceans in a short space of time. A telling sign of things to come as the global fishery is not properly managed.
The Deep offshore of Cape Town is a blue wilderness, sometimes a blue desert but in time the residents reveal themselves.
In order of appearance, Sunfish, Shortfin Mako Sharks, Blue Shark and Yellowfin Tuna. Portraits of this dynamic ocean ecosystem available as stock footage.
